Appointment Information

Soften Ear Wax Prior to Appointment

We recommend softening your ear wax with olive oil or "EARCLEAR - earwax remover" drops for 2 days before your appointment, as this can make the removal process easier, safer, and more comfortable.

Instructions:

  • Lie on your side and place 2 drops of olive oil into the affected ear canal.
  • Remain lying down for 10 minutes to allow the oil to fully soak in and soften the wax blockage.
  • Applying the drops before bedtime is often most effective, as it gives the oil more time to penetrate the wax before standing upright again.

Important:

  • Do NOT use cotton buds (Q-tips) to apply the oil, as this may push the wax deeper into the ear canal.
  • Simply follow the instructions on your olive oil ear drops bottle (such as Ear Clear) and allow the drops to flow naturally into the ear.

It is very important NOT to use ear drops if you have a perforated eardrum (a hole in the eardrum) or if you currently have grommets (ear tubes) in place.

Please let your nurse know before your appointment if either of these applies to you.

Appointment

  • At your scheduled appointment time, you will be welcomed into our clinic room for a full ear health consultation and assessment. This includes discussing your ear symptoms, medical history, and any previous ear-related conditions or treatments.

  • Your nurse will explain the procedure in detail, including the benefits, possible risks, and what to expect during treatment. Written and verbal consent will be obtained before we proceed. A family member or carer is welcome to attend with you if needed.

  • Before treatment begins, we will carefully examine your ears and perform a full assessment to determine whether earwax removal is clinically indicated.

  • You will then be asked to lie comfortably on the medical treatment couch, allowing us to position your head safely for clear visual access to the ear canal. Microsuction can sound quite loud during the procedure, so it is important to remain still and follow instructions when needed. We can pause or stop at any time if you would like.

  • The procedure itself usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the amount and condition of the wax. Most patients describe the experience as unusual rather than painful.

  • After treatment, we will discuss our clinical findings, provide advice on ongoing ear care and wax management, and offer education on how to best maintain healthy ears. If we identify any concerns that require further medical attention, we will recommend follow-up with your GP or appropriate healthcare provider.
