Microsuction is a safe, modern, and effective method of ear wax removal that is generally comfortable and well tolerated by patients. This specialised procedure is performed by a qualified and experienced Registered Nurse using clinical magnification and precise instruments to ensure safe treatment.
As with any medical procedure, there are some risks involved, although complications are uncommon. Your nurse will explain the procedure fully, including any potential risks and considerations, before treatment begins.
The ear is naturally self-cleaning. Ear wax is produced in the outer part of the ear canal and normally moves outward gradually through the natural migration of skin cells, at a rate similar to fingernail growth.
For some people, however, this natural cleaning process does not work effectively. As a result, wax can build up and become impacted inside the ear canal, which may lead to symptoms such as blockage, reduced hearing, discomfort, ringing in the ears, or pressure.
You may be more likely to experience ear wax build-up if you:
We treat children from the age of 4 years and above. If you are considering microsuction for your child, please call 0416 701 858 to discuss whether the procedure is suitable.
For microsuction to be performed safely and effectively, the patient must be able to remain still and follow instructions. In younger children, this can sometimes be challenging, which may increase the risk of injury to the ear canal or eardrum.
Signs of impacted ear wax may include (but are not limited to):
While referrals from your GP or audiologist are welcome, they are NOT required to book an appointment with us.
Avoid placing anything into the ear canal (such as cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects) to clean your ears, as this can push wax deeper and may worsen symptoms or cause blockage.
You may also use over-the-counter wax softening drops from a pharmacy (such as EarClear or olive oil) to help support the ear’s natural self-cleaning process. These can be used occasionally—typically once a month or once a fortnight is sufficient for most people.
