What is it?
Microsuction ear wax removal is a procedure where ear wax is removed from the ear under a Head Worn Microscope. The microscope is used to directly visualise the ear wax whilst it is being removed using either ENT micro-instruments (e.g. ear hook, jobson horne) or gentle suction with a low pressure suction machine and fine sterile probe (microsuction).
Microsuction is dry, safe and effective way to remove excessive ear wax.
In our earwax care clinic, microsuction and curettage is performed by qualified Registered Nurses to assist people who are suffering from ear wax blockages and impaction.
Along with curettage and the use of fine instruments, microsuction is the preferred wax removal method of Ear Nose and Throat specialists.
What to expect during the Micro-suction procedure?
Microscopic and microsuction ear wax removal typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes to perform.
This can vary depending on the amount and type of of ear wax, how deep the ear wax is inside the ear canal, if ENT instruments or microsuction is being used and whether you are having one or both ears treated.
- Before the procedure begins, you will be required to fill out a questionnaire relating to your ear past medical history. The questionnaire also includes questions about your current symptoms (such as hearing loss, itching, ringing or a feeling of blockage). Your experienced and highly trained Registered Nurse will then discuss this questionnaire with you.
- It is performed with you laying down on a medical couch, allowing your nurse to move your head into a safe position to carry out the procedure and allows you to have greater control of your head and comfort to keep still throughout the procedure.
- A bright light and ear speculum inserted into the ear are used to help examine inside the ear. At this point, it will be determined whether the amount of earwax you have necessitates the micro-suction procedure.
- If wax removal is determined as being clinically indicated, the procedure will be explained and an opportunity to ask questions provided.
- A very small micro-suction catheter attached to suction tubing will then be inserted directly into your ear canal. This catheter gently removes excess ear wax – much like a tiny vacuum cleaner! Throughout the procedure, your nurse will carefully observe the process with a Head Worn Microscope; converging 3D lenses fitted with a bright light. They are used to ensure that direct vision of your ear canal and drum is maintained at all times.
- Occasionally we may ask you to return later if softening is required to your ear wax.
- Safety is our priority, and we pride ourselves in making the procedure as pain free and comfortable as possible.
